To sustain the current and forecast populations, ~40% of water is pulled from the SF Bay Area Delta and another ~40% is pulled from the Eastern Sierra. That approximates to a natural water supply that can sustain around 500,000 people. Only 13% of that water is from local/recycles water supplies. The City of Los Angeles Dept of Water and Power serves a population of over 4 million. And within California, I think a lot responsibility for the current state of affairs falls on the head of Los Angeles. I focus on California due to the enormity of its investments to attempt to sustain its massive population. The state of water security is California - and the US West more broadly - is a fascinating history problem in my mind. Cadillac Desert remains as relevant as always.
